COBRA–continue your health coverage if your employment ends.
COBRA provides you the option of temporarily continuing your company’s group health coverage (up to 18 months) if you experience a “qualifying event” such as:
- Job termination (except in cases of gross misconduct)
- Job elimination
- Reduced hours that cause you to lose health benefits
Coverage is available to you and your spouse and/or dependents if they were covered under your group health plan at least one day before the qualifying event occurred. If you choose to buy the coverage, you must pay the entire premium amount and, often, an additional administrative fee.
Plan administrators must notify you of your COBRA eligibility and give you 60 days to accept or reject the coverage.
