Can I request reimbursement for expenses occurred for out-of town health care services such as airline fare, hotel costs?
The cost may be reimbursable, as long as the trip is primarily for medically necessary health care services. You may be able to include the cost of lodging not provided by the hospital. The maximum amount you are to be reimbursed for lodging is $50.00 per night per person. Lodging expenses are solely for the individual who is seeking medical treatment. If a person is traveling with a dependent that is sick and not able to travel on his/her own up to $100 per night will qualify.. Meals are not reimbursable under the medical spending account.
Please note that you are not allowed to seek reimbursement for medical expenses for a trip or vacation taken for a change of environment, improvement of morale, or a general improvement of health, even if it requested by a doctor. Additional information can be found in IRS Publication 502 available on Discovery?s web site.
